Remi Kohno: Creating Attitudes with Sushi

Tell us about your business/company or hustle. What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?

6 years ago my family and I had this CRAZY idea to all work together on a business. So, we started a small food stand at the 626 Night Market that was named, What Float Ur Boat. It had a very fun nautical theme from the stand looking like pirate ship to the plastic boats we served our musubis on. My family and the crew always had such a great time at the night markets but this year (obviously) was a lot different.

Unable to attend the annual night market, due to COVID, we decided to change our attitude and launch a new Cloud Kitchen concept, Sushi With Attitude (SWA). In this Cloud Kitchen, we’re able to utilize a commercial kitchen for the purpose of preparing food for delivery or takeout. It allows us to accommodate for the changing times and start a virtual brand at minimal cost.

We’re aiming to fuse sushi and musubi together, called a SushiBi (currently in the process of being trademarked). A SushiBi in 3 words is: sushi with attitude, and we get creative and combine odd combinations that seem to just work, like Chipotle Caramelized Bacon and Avocados along with Salmon Poke and Flaming Hot Cheetos!

We’re all going through difficult and challenging times right now so we wanted to bring some fun attitude to people eating at home. For example we launched SWA in August and delivered fun sunglasses in each bag, in September we gave away a Private SushiBi Catering event (6 closest friends/family), in October we gave away $100 Amazon Gift Card, and this holiday season we are giving away a sweet little treat in each order. Now more than ever people are eating at home and there has been a growing need for exciting food deliveries so we wanted to bring some fun attitude to people’s homes during these unprecedented times.

Can you briefly walk us through your story – how you got started and how you got to where you are today. You can include as little or as much detail as you’d like.

As I mentioned earlier, my family and I started this business 6 years ago at the 626 Night Market in Arcadia, CA. Unable to attend the annual night market, due to COVID, we decided to change our attitude and launch a new Cloud Kitchen concept, Sushi With Attitude (SWA). We’re bringing some of our fun attitude to people eating at home.

What specific obstacles or challenges have you faced while on your journey? What were they and how have you overcome them?

Aside from adapting to the challenging times of COVID and opening up a cloud kitchen concept, working with the large delivery apps has been a challenge as well. Each platform has their own nuances and understanding the customer’s wants/needs on each platform is something we are continuously learning. But overall we are learning and growing together.

What quality or characteristic of yours do you feel is most important to you as an entrepreneur? Why?

I would say definitely your attitude. In business but also in life, there is going to be a lot of ups and downs but having the right attitude can help you push through those difficult times.

What advice would you give to someone who is just entering into your field?

For those entering into the restaurant industry during COVID the advice I would give them is to have an open mind and see everyday as a new opportunity to learn and find new answers/solutions.

Aside from our regular social media feeds, AHN group provides a deeper more inspirational look at people who are hustling within the asian community. Reading everyone’s updates has inspired me as well as my family to keep growing as individuals and as a company.
